Visiting a Business
Page 1

One of the most deciding factors in receiving the job you want is education. Students go to college in hope that their hard work will pay off with a good high paying job. Ironically most students focus on majors without thinking of what their job might entail.

The best approach to determining your education needs is to go visit a business in the field you are considering. Inquire about current job openings and future job openings. This way you will know what education goals to aim for and what education you will receive on the job. For example an auto body shop would prefer a technical hands-on school or on the job training, while a hospital would prefer a college degree. Some specialized jobs such as computer networking simply require certifications to show your level of competency in the field. Certifications leave the option of going to college, technical school, or even learning at home.

Visiting a business can also help you consider your education goals from a financial stand point. You will want to ask about the estimated pay you would receive in that job and how much on the job additional training you need before you reach full pay. College is the most expensive of the options, but there are many different scholarships, tax write-offs and low interest loans to help you overcome this problem. Tech schools are cheaper, but still create a financial burden. On the other hand tech schools usually guarantee you a job immediately when you get out of training. Self study is the cheapest but it requires lots of effort and good self motivation.
