Background Information
Page 3
It is a good idea to learn as much as you can about the company or business you are applying to. Not only does having knowledge on the company show interest on your part, but it prepares you for any questions that the interviewer might ask you about the company during the the interview.
Some information you should know before the interview are:
- Know the name of the interviewer. Nothing is more embarrassing or damaging then forgetting or mispronouncing his or her name. Such a lapse creates a poor first impressions.
- Job description and job title that you have applied for.
- Divisions and departments of interest to you.
- Employee benefits.
- Organizational structure.
- Training programs.
- Products and services.
- How long they have been in business.
- Types of clients.
- Geographic location of home office, branches, or stores.
Ways to obtain information:
- Magazines, books, or websites produced by the company.
- “Ward’s Directory of the 51,000 Largest U.S. Corporations.”
- “Walker’s Manual of Western Corporations” (http://www.walkersnamual.com).
- “National Trade and Professional Associations.”
VISIT LOCATION:
It’s a good idea to take time 2 or 3 days before your interview to find out where your interview will be taking place and what building and room it will be in. This gives you a good sense of how much time it should take for you to get to your destination without being late, and will relieve stress on the day of the interview.
SLEEP:
Make sure to get a good night's sleep the night before the interview so you are awake and fresh. Never pull an "all nighter" the night before. (Big no, no.) This will cause you to be groggy, cranky, and less in tune to what is happening.
